Hopper / Awning Windows
Awning windows or hopper windows, sometimes known as fanlights, have been around probably since windows were first invented. Very often they complement a predominantly casement window system, occupying the upper section of the window frame to the casement’s lower section.
The popularity of these windows, especially in Australia, stems from the fact that they let in air and light very efficiently – a major consideration in the days before air conditioning. They can also be left open in the rain – something you can’t do with other windows without letting the rain in.
Another big advantage has always been that hopper windows can be located in nooks and crannies that are difficult to get to, or where large obstacles are in front of them making access difficult, and still be operated, with the use of a pole and hook if need be.
But how do hopper windows stand up against their more modern competitors, such as sliding and louvre windows? Well, just because they have been around for such a long time doesn’t mean they aren’t able to take advantage of the latest technological developments in all aspects of window design.
Durable Windows by Streamline Windows
At Streamline Windows we have been in the forefront of research and development on these long-established windows. Our hollow-sectioned aluminium frames, with their exceptional strength, make possible sizes that would have been quite impractical with wooden frames.
Our awning window frames come in widths of 48mm, 75mm and 100mm, and they can be as large as 2500mm high by 6000mm, which would have five windows within it. Even with the largest frames, our double sealing system means better soundproofing and reduced heat loss in cooler weather.
We manufacture awning / hopper windows from the same materials and with the same expertise and dedication to quality as with other types of window. With rounded stiles and rails, and the smooth, ultra-modern look of glass and aluminium, they have equally good looks.
With the benefit of new aluminium frames and improvements in hinges. You can open and swivel our hopper windows so as to clean the outside from inside your home. Such convenience had been unheard of until recent times. On top of that, they’re low maintenance, robust and economical.
Security, which has often been an issue with these windows, is taken care of with our multi-point locking system and galvanised glass that will keep even the most determined of housebreakers out. And their unique design means that they can be locked in an open position, keeping the best of both worlds – ventilation without vulnerability to theft or rain.
And don’t forget how these windows can be used in conjunction with almost any other type of window. Whilst awning and casement units have long been with us as a commonplace duo, you can also have, for example, a picture window (non-opening) with an awning window on top. The same goes for sliding windows and doors, which often have an awning above. It all depends on the style of your home and what you think looks best.
That’s another great strength of awning / hopper windows Brisbane – they don’t have to compete directly with other window types because they so often complement them. So remember to include awning windows in the design of your new window arrangement.
